Shawnee Mission: Student Transportation Update
UPDATE: Wednesday, August 19, 2026
Morning route performance continued to improve today, with the strongest improvements in the second and third tiers of SMSD’s three-tier bell schedule. Buses complete three consecutive morning runs—high school (Tier 1), elementary school (Tier 2), and middle school (Tier 3)—with tight turnaround times between each, meaning delays early in the morning can carry forward into later tiers.
This morning, 99% of buses arrived on time for high school, 96% for elementary school, and 93% for middle school, up from 98%, 94%, and 90%, respectively, on Tuesday. The continued progress, particularly in elementary and middle school, demonstrates that the routing and operational adjustments made over the past several days are having a meaningful impact and improving performance across the morning schedule.
Afternoon routes typically take more time to stabilize due to factors such as traffic congestion around school sites, student loading and release times, and parent traffic patterns. Performance continued to improve today and this afternoon, 94% of high school buses, 79% of elementary school buses, and 84%of middle school buses were on time.
These gains reflect the targeted operational adjustments Zum and SMSD have made to improve afternoon reliability across all three tiers. Zum is continuing to work closely with school teams and SMSD to streamline loading, improve traffic flow, and reduce turnaround times. Families can support these efforts by using designated traffic patterns and pickup areas and following guidance from school staff.
Zum and SMSD are closely monitoring performance and making adjustments to improve reliability and on-time performance throughout the afternoon schedule.
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 18, 2026
We saw continued improvement in morning route performance today compared with Monday morning, particularly across the second and third tiers of SMSD’s three-tier bell schedule.
In a three-tier system, buses complete three consecutive morning runs—high school (Tier 1), elementary school (Tier 2), and middle school (Tier 3)—with condensed turnaround times between each. Even small delays can compound as buses move from one tier to the next.
This morning, 98% of buses were on time for high school, 94% for elementary school, and 90% for middle school, compared with 98%, 85%, and 83%, respectively, on Monday morning. The significant improvement in Tiers 2 and 3 reflects the impact of the operational and routing changes implemented over the past several days.
Afternoon routes typically take more time to stabilize, as dismissal introduces additional variables such as school-site congestion, student loading and release times, and parent traffic patterns. This afternoon, on-time performance was 96% for high school, 76% for elementary school, and 82% for middle school.
We also want to remind families that traffic congestion at school campuses during afternoon dismissal continues to impact bus loading and departure times. Because buses move from one tier directly to the next, these delays can cascade across subsequent routes. Zum is working closely with schools and the SMSD team to improve bus flow and loading efficiency. Families can help by following designated traffic patterns, pickup areas, and guidance from school staff. Even small improvements in loading and departure times can help buses stay on schedule across all three tiers.
Zum and SMSD teams will continue working together to optimize the system and improve on-time performance across all three tiers.
Shawnee Mission Transportation Update: Taking Action to Improve Service
Adding routes and bus drivers, and tightening route timing across the district’s three-tier bell schedule
Monday, August 17, 2026
In the first three days of the school year in Shawnee Mission School District, while the majority of routes have gone smoothly, some routes have run behind schedule. We know even one late route can disrupt a family’s entire day, and we deeply appreciate families’ patience as Zum and District teams work with urgency to address recent service issues.
Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) operates on a tight three-tier bell schedule, meaning buses complete three consecutive runs each morning: high school (tier one), then elementary school (tier two), then middle school (tier three). When one route is delayed, that impacts the timing of ensuing routes. To give a live example from today, Monday, August 17, 98% of school buses were on time to the high school in the morning; however, only 85% could make the turnaround to be on time to elementary school, and 83% could be on time for the middle school bell time.
What Zum Is Doing Now
Because SMSD operates a three-tier bell system, turnaround time between the first, second, and third runs is limited. Zum and District teams are working together to implement solutions within those time constraints, including adding 15–20 additional routes and drivers to reduce route length and improve on-time performance. Because changes to an active transportation network require careful coordination with drivers and families, we are implementing adjustments thoughtfully and communicating them directly to those affected. With these actions, we expect to resolve most remaining issues by the end of this week.
These challenges are not systemwide. Through the Zum mobile app, families can rate every school bus ride, providing Zum with real-time feedback on their experience. Over the past week, Shawnee Mission families submitted approximately 1,700 ratings, with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.
How We Can Work Together
Zum routed an additional 688 students into the active network after the school year started, with our team working through the weekend to minimize disruption to existing routes. These late registrations contributed to unanticipated delays during the opening days of school. If students are still in need of bus services, families are encouraged to register as soon as possible so they can be approved and incorporated into the system with minimal disruption.
We also continue to experience traffic congestion at school campuses during afternoon dismissal, which can increase loading times and delay buses as they begin routes and these delays will then cascade to next tiers. We are working closely with schools and the District to improve bus flow and loading efficiency. Families can help by following designated traffic patterns, pickup areas, and guidance from school staff. Even small improvements in loading and departure times can help buses stay on schedule as they move from one tier to the next.
Since school started, the Zum team has worked around the clock with SMSD to sharpen route performance in real time. Both Zum and the district have full visibility into route-level data through Zum’s CMX platform, enabling us to identify and correct timing issues together in hours, not days.
Families should see improved on-time performance by later this week. We will continue to share updates here.
