Zum Holds Electric School Bus Driver Training in Oakland, Accelerating District’s Transition to 100% EVs

The three-day training, held at Zum’s Oakland bus yard, covered everything from the basics of EV technology and safety protocols to daily operations and maintenance. Drivers were instructed in the unique driving dynamics of electric school buses (ESBs), while mechanics delved into troubleshooting techniques, preventative maintenance schedules, and other features that differentiate ESBs from diesel buses.

The event also connected Zum teams with first responders; the Oakland Fire Department received critical training on emergency scenarios involving electric buses, highlighting the procedures to safely manage potential incidents. The training also included discussions where participants shared their insights, concerns and suggestions about the transition.

“By giving drivers, mechanics, and first responders the knowledge and skills to lead the charge in sustainable student transportation, Zum is setting new standards for environmental stewardship and public health,” said Ritu Narayan, Founder and CEO of Zum. “Additionally, the fact that this landmark transition to 100% electric school buses will happen in a historically underserved community underscores the importance of Zum’s mission, aligning our efforts with the broader goal of addressing these critical issues through sustainable practices and community engagement.”

Oakland’s transition to ESBs will reduce its carbon footprint and foster a community that is informed, involved, and invested in a cleaner, greener future.

Together, we are not just embracing change – we are driving it.
